A ferry from Port McNeill lands you in Sointula, the village founded by Finnish settlers seeking utopia in 1901, and Malcolm Island's quiet roads and gravel take it from there: 10 to 90 km of waterfront riding out to Mitchell Bay or the Pulteney Point lighthouse. Orcas and humpbacks pass offshore, and the co-op store in Sointula has run since 1909. Mostly unpaved and hillier than it looks.
