The Japanese Gardens is a community-built memorial garden within Dinner Bay Park on Mayne Island, commemorating Japanese settlers who lived and worked on the island between 1900 and 1942. Created largely by volunteers from 1999 onward, it features a pond with island, bridges including a traditional zigzagging yatsuhashi, a meditation hut, waterfall, and seasonal plantings including cherry trees donated by descendant families. A touring cyclist visiting Mayne Island can explore a quietly moving cultural landscape shaped entirely by community hands.
