Ben Franklin

Info · Activity / Experience · Vancouver (Vancouver, Coast and Mountains) · Moderate

The Ben Franklin (PX-15) is a 1968-built mesoscaphe — a pressurized drifting submarine — that completed a landmark 30-day unmanned drift through the Gulf Stream in 1969 and is now on permanent display at the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Vanier Park. The museum occupies a prime waterfront location along the Kitsilano shoreline, a route well-travelled by touring cyclists, and contextualizes the vessel within broader Pacific Northwest and Canadian maritime history. It is one of very few surviving research submersibles accessible to the public.
