Fernie Historic Oil Derrick
The Fernie Historic Oil Derrick is the last standing wooden oil derrick in British Columbia, situated at the eastern gateway to Fernie on Highway 3. Its metal components were salvaged from early 20th-century oil exploration rigs in the Flathead Valley and reassembled on the current site in 1984. Touring cyclists arriving from the Crowsnest Pass will pass directly by this landmark, which offers a tangible glimpse into BC's brief and largely unsuccessful oil-prospecting era.
