The Port Alberni Branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library has served the community since 1936, with origins in the back of McVicar's Drug Store where shop employees acted as library attendants. The branch moved to the Echo Centre in 1972 and underwent a major refurbishment and expansion in 2007, now holding a collection of over 35,000 items. Touring cyclists can drop in for free public WiFi, sit-down service, and public access computers in a fully wheelchair-accessible space.
