Big Lonely Doug
Big Lonely Doug is Canada's second-largest Douglas-fir — 69 metres tall with a 12-metre circumference — left standing alone after its surrounding ancient forest in the Gordon River Valley was clearcut in 2011, making it a striking symbol of old-growth loss. Located within Pacheedaht First Nation territory roughly 45 minutes from Port Renfrew, the tree stands adjacent to the unprotected Eden Grove, which features a short boardwalk trail through towering old-growth redcedars and Douglas-firs. For cycling tourists exploring the Port Renfrew big-tree circuit, it offers a sobering and visually arresting detour into a clearcut landscape dominated by a single colossal survivor.
